Samsung unveils its new Fold and Flip, Motorola relaunches the Razr, Huawei pushes its futuristic concepts, and even Apple seems to be slowly getting closer to the topic through the numerous rumors of a foldable iPhone. On YouTube, at tech shows, and in specialized media, foldables sometimes give the impression of being the obvious future of the smartphone.

And yet… around us, it's a different story.

Let's be honest: how many people do we actually see with a foldable smartphone on a daily basis? Aside from a few tech enthusiasts, high-end users, or very specific professional profiles, these devices remain surprisingly rare. It's a rather fascinating paradox when you consider the marketing energy deployed around the concept.

The problem may stem from a fairly simple question: what is the real purpose of a foldable smartphone for the majority of users?

Today, many people already have a fairly complete digital ecosystem: a smartphone for everyday use, a PC for work or play, a television for multimedia content, and sometimes a tablet for convenience. In this context, the argument of a "phone that almost becomes a tablet" doesn't necessarily seem revolutionary. For some users, it even looks more like a solution that's still searching for its problem.

There's also the very practical question of everyday use. Foldable phones have improved enormously in recent years, but they often remain more expensive, thicker, heavier, and sometimes less reassuring than a traditional smartphone in the public's mind. Even when reliability is good, the idea of a folding screen continues to fuel a certain mistrust. And when the price easily exceeds a thousand euros, many consumers suddenly become much less adventurous.

Does this mean foldable smartphones are useless? Not necessarily. Certain users can clearly find them beneficial. Intensive multitasking, professional mobility, document consultation, light editing, drawing, content creation, or simply the desire for a hybrid device… there are uses where the form factor makes sense. But these uses remain fairly specific, far from the universal need that traditional smartphones have created over the years.

So why are brands insisting so much?

Because foldable devices also play another role: that of a technological showcase. In the automotive industry, some brands develop hypercars that almost no one will ever buy, but which serve to demonstrate expertise, innovative capacity, and technical mastery. Foldable smartphones sometimes fulfill a similar function. They show what a brand is capable of producing, attract media attention, enhance its premium image, and generate buzz around its entire product range.

Meanwhile, the true future of the smartphone may well lie elsewhere. Embedded artificial intelligence, ever-increasing assistants, new software uses, smart glasses, voice interfaces or ultra-thin formats… the next mobile revolutions may not come solely from a screen capable of folding in half.

Will foldable smartphones disappear altogether? Probably not. They will likely continue to evolve, become more refined, and mature. But one question remains: are we truly witnessing the next major evolution of the smartphone… or simply an impressive technological demonstration that the general public never really felt the need for?

Depuis plusieurs années, impossible d’y échapper : les smartphones pliables reviennent régulièrement dans l’actualité tech.
